The Hitorangi clan and the Ma’ohi Rapu wish to offer their support to the Maori A’otearoa with a statement of solidarity and unity with those involved with the 2011 Hikoi (march) on the New Zealand government. The (Takutai Moana) Bill aims for the Crown government to confiscate indigenous Maori rights to the foreshore and seabed, for the opportunity of leasing or privatizing traditional M?ori assets. Further, it is discriminatory in that Pakeha (non-Maori) would continue to hold title to land that is contiguous to the shore while Maori title would be stripped. As Moana Jackson writes in his primer on the Marine and Coaster Area Bill, this is “a subordinate title predicated on a notion of essentially subordinate Maori rights.”
