State Fisheries Minister Norman Moore has slammed marine sanctuaries as a “ridiculous notion” that will jeopardise the viability of WA’s commercial fishing sector. In his strongest attack on Federal Government plans for a network of marine parks around WA’s south-west, Mr Moore said no-take areas were “not the answer” to protecting the State’s fish stocks. The veteran minister said WA’s fisheries were already among the best protected in the world and claimed he would oppose the imposition of any sanctuary zones unless they were a last resort.
