Marine Sanctuaries: a fair, equitable and comprehensive approach

The first national network of marine protected areas will: (a) destroy recreational fishing for families and kids in the name of some hare-brained hippy scheme; (b) bring our commercial fishing industry to its knees; (c) interfere with countless valuable oil & gas research projects; or (d) all of the above? It is in the nature of a robust democracy like Australia that policy and reform will often be approached with passion and even vehemence, but when it comes to marine sanctuaries, the only shared ground – or in this case, sea – appears to be the exaggerated and ill-informed forecasts of doom.
