‘Water wars’ pit Georgia and Alabama on opposite sides in dispute over rights to Tennessee River

A civil war of sorts is brewing between several Southern states that has nothing to do with slavery and everything to do with states’ rights. It’s over water – specifically, the Tennessee River – and whether Georgia can legally tap into it to feed sprawling metro Atlanta. The Alabama Legislature approved a resolution last week to counter a move by Georgia legislators who are seeking a feasibility study of channeling water from the Tennessee River basin to the Atlanta area.
