Backpacking below the rim under scrutiny

Some of the 37,732 people who backpacked in the Grand Canyon last year will soon be receiving a letter asking them what should happen in the backcountry. The question is wide open, because it’s up to the public to identify what’s going well in the more remote areas of the Grand Canyon and what’s lacking. Doug Nering, for instance, would like more clarity on whether he can use an inflatable raft to cross the Colorado River without a permit. And he is worried about bathrooms in the backcountry, too.
