Prime Minister Julia Gillard signs $276m Tasmania forestry pact

PRIME Minister Julia Gillard has signed a $276 million Tasmania forest deal today, but only after flatly rejecting changes sought by Greens to withhold industry support until new forest reserves are legislated. Ms Gillard and Tasmania Premier Lara Giddings declared it was the final act on the divisive issue, and they obtained pledges of support from timber and green groups. The agreement provides an $85 million exit package for forestry contractors and $120 million of federal money over the next 15 years to diversify the economy of towns affected by the industry downturn. The plan will restructure the timber industry, provide pay-outs for some to exit, and protect native forest.
