Major rewrite planned for sanctuary zoning areas

Divers in the Upper Keys have been working to make the reef at Snapper Ledge a protected marine area for years. Fishing guides and residents in Marathon worry about degradation of nearshore shallows and fishing spots along the oceanside Marathon Bight, running from Sombrero Beach to Vaca Cut. On Aug. 16, advisors to the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary take “a first step” toward updating the zoning plan within the 2,700 square miles of water in the Keys sanctuary.
