BC’s Recreational halibut fishery to close early due to low stocks

British Columbia’s recreational halibut fishery is facing its earliest closure ever, as halibut stocks are estimated to be at their lowest in about two decades. Fisheries and Oceans Canada announced the Sept. 5 closure on Monday, citing catch information that indicates the recreational share of the total allowable catch will be achieved this month. Last year, the recreational halibut fishery closed on Oct. 18.
