Open letter to the Namibian Parliamentary Standing Committee on seal culling

In an open letter to this committee, we wish to convey our sentiments with regards to fisheries, employment, tourism and the annual massacre of Cape Fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus). It is ironic that when the seal colony stood at 2 million prior to 1990, fish in the Benguela Current were plentiful, yet now that the colony stands at 650 000 the Namibian Minister of Fisheries blames the seals for eating all the fish. Similarly, the TAC quota set for the cull has increased more than ten fold, from 9000 seals to 91 000 despite several mass die-offs having taken place in recent years.
